When news reaches Russia, his fairytale is in jeopardy when his parents travel to New York to annul their marriage. IMDb editor Arno Kazarian offers sneak peeks at 12 films he’s screening at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Anora and the dangerous and strangely erotic Misericordia. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference, Mikey Madison said director Sean Baker would role-play various sexual positions with his wife, producer Samantha Quan, to show the actors what he wanted from them.

I know making a film takes a lot of effort and writing a review is a matter of a few minutes. Anyway, I wanted to write down my thoughts. I was looking forward to seeing this film, I liked another Sean Baker film, «The Florida Project».
And I saw a few others
«Anora» has a pleasant atmosphere, the actors do their job well, however I found the humor to be monotonous, as well as some scenes that I would personally cut. The film is too long for this story. Also, the Russians seemed cartoonish to me, especially the evil mother.
In my opinion, the script could have been written/edited better
The first part is not bad, but the second part, starting with the Armenian invasion of «the mansion», was funny at first but then became boring for me. The final scenes with Yura Borisov gave the characters depth and I started to feel at least something for them. Overall, it’s not a bad film, but I wouldn’t like to see it again.
