After months of isolation, Isherwood «Ish» Williams learns that much of the world has fallen victim to a mysterious disease. Yet, despite his instinct to isolate himself further, Ish sets out to develop a new civilization.
The novel is written in the late 1940s, after World War II
Stewart, referenced in the Korman Productions Deep Dive TV Podcast: Earth Abides in Episode 1 of MGM+ Deep Dive, «Alone» with Dave and Stacie (2024). The version on my shelf is copyrighted 1947, but Wikipedia says it was 1949.
The people you meet represent the way people cope with these enormous losses
The effect of the story is that someone 80 years ago was writing about a global pandemic and its possible effects on people. Ish represents the reader, someone who didn’t have to see people die, the news, the hopelessness, and the defeat.
This ties in closely with the poem Ozymandias
The fragility of man and the courage of humanity in his achievements. I look forward to the rest of the installments and rereading the novel once again.
