Chronology

Lee, who recounts his life in Mexico City among American expats, students, and bar owners surviving on part-time jobs and GI Bill benefits. He is forced to pursue a young man named Allerton, who is based on Adelbert Lewis Marker.. IMDb editor Arnaud Kazarian offers quick previews of 12 films he is screening at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Anora and the Dangerous , strangely erotic Misericordia .. Luca Guadagnino states in an interview that Queer is a project he wanted to do since he was 20.. QUEER has strong echoes of the same director’s CALL ME BY YOUR NAME. The central character in both films is unequivocally gay, while the object of his desire is harder to pin down.

He is played wonderfully by Daniel Craig

As in the previous film, we are not in America, but we are among Americans. However, whereas the protagonist in CALL ME BY YOUR NAME was a sexually pulsating adolescent, here our focus is a middle-aged writer addicted to drugs and alcohol. The first installment of QUEER features a will-you?/don’t-you as Craig William Lee’s character lusts after fresh-faced ex-soldier Eugene Allerton, played magnificently by Drew Starkey. With excellent support from Jason Schwartzman and Drew Droge, who play other denizens of the local coffee shops and bars, the film maintains a steady pace. The screenplay (Justin Kuritzks, based on the book by William S. Burrow) and direction are as assured as expected.

She does nothing but her work

But the film kicks into another gear in its final third, when Lee and Allerton go on a field trip to find a plant that Lee realizes can unleash the human capacity for telepathy. This incredible adventure eventually leads to an encounter with a certain Dr. Cotter, whom they discover deep in the jungle while conducting research. Dr. Cotter is played, in an incredible performance, by the great Leslie Manville, unrecognizable at first, so complete is her transformation. It’s fascinating that even a good actor like Daniel Craig is, unfortunately, somewhat dwarfed by a great actor like Manville in a role that shows her to her maximum advantage.

She is simply gorgeous

Give this woman an Oscar, please. QUEER is made with great care, has many remarkable sequences, and is interestingly indebted, as Guardanino himself stated, to the work of Michael Powell and Emerick Pressburger. This is a film about the deep desire for contact, even to the point of fusion, with another human being. In this sense, again like the best of Powell and Pressburger, it is extremely romantic. For some, it may feel too much. For me, the difference between, say, BLACK DARCISSUS or A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH and this movie is that I just walked away after watching QUEER, and I wasn’t swept away by it like I was by CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, which is, I admit, a weaker film.

Go see QUEER anyway
